We are actively searching for an experienced Controls Technician to join our team! The Controls Technician II is primarily responsible for the installation or retrofit of new building automation systems while providing professional customer service. The Controls Technician II must possess the ability to interact with both customers and contractors while being responsive and diplomatic with the goal of maintaining long-term relationships.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of HVAC systems from airflow, hydronic, refrigeration theory, & building control techniques
  • Perform end testing and programming (ability to configure and create / write block programming for either Trane or Niagara as per specification & sequence
  • Initiate startups (ability to work with the equipment manufacturer on systems start up), basic third party integration (example: meters or lighting control panels), & commissioning.
  • Develop system graphics for control system as assigned for either Trane or Niagara while incorporating all points / controllers into headend system (Trane SC, or Trane ES, or Niagara) to complete the BAS frontend system layout. 
  • Serves as lead technician for small control projects while coordinating with the project team and customer to precisely understand the requirements for all onsite installations by examining building layouts, forecasting building issues, gathering materials, & synchronizing onsite work.
  • Completes customer training after project completion & provides all closeout documents to project manager
  • Troubleshoot Trane controllers & communication trunks while understanding electrical diagrams.
  • Complete field checkout to include point-to-point on all equipment with Trane controls while utilizing checkout documentation provided by engineering to verify system performance.
  • Configure, setup, and calibrate end devices on factory or field installed hardware.
  • Create and program site databases.
  • Examine and troubleshoot communication Links and Local Area Networks.
  • Provide technical assistance to installation sub-contractors as required.
  • Identify, analyze and diagnose BAS and system problems through remote interface means or directly while on site.
  • Maintain accurate and complete project notes that can be used by engineering for As-Built drawings.
  • Flexibility to work overtime/weekends, as required; regular travel requirements with occasional overnight travel

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in HVAC and five years’ field experience; education can be substituted for an additional 2 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of various communications protocols used in the industry including BACnet, LonTalk and Modbus; familiarity with networking applications, Ethernet, TCP-IP, IP Networks and infrastructure; experience with Trane, Tridium, and/or Teletrol building automation is desired but experience with other control manufacturers such as Johnson Controls, Schneider, Honeywell, Siemens, Distech, etc. will also be considered.

The physical demands of the position include occasional sitting; frequent stooping, crouching, kneeling, balancing, and climbing; and constant standing, walking, reaching, and gripping.  Material handling demands include lifting from floor level to overhead, with occasional lifting up to 115 lbs., frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., and constant lifting up to 25 lbs., placing the position in the Very Heavy Physical Demand Classification (PDC).  Must be able to talk and hear.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

This position requires working outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms and possible extreme weather conditions.  While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment. The associate is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock (high voltage); and vibration.  The associate is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
